    Multiple Windows 8 editions, again – at what point is it too many?

    At what point is it too many?

    From the latest leaked build of Windows 8, “dungeon” from the Windows 8 Center forums opened up the setup.cfg file and was able to uncover a list of Windows 8 versions to come. Nothing is official at this point, but this is what was found within the Windows 8 Build 7955 files. Below is a list of Windows 8 SKUs lined up for ARM devices. Full list can be found be found at the bottom of the post:

    ARM.Starter=00342 ARM.StarterN=00345 ARM.StarterE=00348 ARM.HomeBasic=00346 ARM.HomeBasicN=00358 ARM.HomeBasicE=00349 ARM.HomePremium=00359 ARM.HomePremiumN=00362 ARM.HomePremiumE=00351 ARM.Professional=00371 ARM.ProfessionalN=00376 ARM.ProfessionalE=00352 ARM.Enterprise=00392 ARM.EnterpriseN=00403 ARM.EnterpriseE=00355 ARM.Ultimate=00426 ARM.UltimateN=00432 ARM.UltimateE=00356

    This list confirms a couple of things:

    1) Microsoft to continue selling Windows 8 E for European Union countries
    Back in 2009 before the Windows 7 release, pressure was shown towards Microsoft by the European Union on antitrust issues its operating system would face, being that only Internet Explorer was installed. To avoid this, Microsoft produced a separate version of Windows 7 for European Union countries, which featured a randomized ballot system for users to choose a browser of their choice.

    2) ARM devices to receive the whole Windows 8 arsenal:
    For better or worse, unlike tablets on the market today which are locked to one particular type of operating system, all the Windows 8 SKUs from Starter to Ultimate will be available for ARM devices. This is good because it may help keep the cost of tablets down. But this could also be counter-effective for the same reason why Windows 7 was criticized – too much confusion over the different versions.

    3)  Windows 8N?
    No one knows exactly what this N stands for at this point. Anything said would be purely speculative, but it is interesting to see the possibility of the addition of another series of Windows products to the already extravagant variety.

    At what point is it too many? Are more choices better because customers are given more variety, and not forced to pay for what they won’t use? Or would this result in more confusion and end up being counter-effective? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
